I love my job, I love my business and I am hugely proud of what has been achieved and very focused on the opportunities that lie ahead. I am proud of the team that work within my business and the growth that is being achieved.

That is not to say that I haven’t made mistakes. Some that I wish I could go back and alter, some that have taught me valuable lessons. I have had some fantastic days, some dreadful days and some days where all I have wanted to do is lock the door and never go back. Often I wonder what it is that makes me tick, on the good days it is easy to understand, on the tough days it can be difficult to comprehend and I am not sure that I ever will really find the definitive answer.

Running a business can be rewarding, lonely, frustrating, exhilarating, exhausting, amazing and challenging, all in one day at times. Learning skills, gaining respect, earning respect and even making the wrong decision and losing respect, it all goes with the territory.

Having come from a corporate world in big business to now running a small business, the contrast is stark. There are no big budgets to order marketing products from, there are no HR departments to handle staffing issues, there are no big finance departments controlling information and giving reports. It’s all hands on deck.

I thought I knew how to run a business in 2009 but the reality was I didn’t have a clue and I am still learning every single day. The day that I give up is the day that I think I have nothing left to learn, then I will know that my heart is no longer signed up.

All I do know is that I love it.

Sacrifices will be made, time with your family will be limited and in my experience the time that you do get must be treasured. Life will feel chaotic at times but then at other times you will feel extremely privileged to work for yourself.

What I can say categorically is that I’m in it hook, line and sinker. FindMyPub.com Ltd is another member of my family and if you are considering taking on a business then it is likely that is exactly what yours will become too.
