The Wheel is located in Ticknall, a small village in South Derbyshire. The pub itself is situated on the main road through the village, the A514, and also benefits from having public transport stops right outside. Approximately two miles from the site is Calke Abbey, a popular destination country park and a playground. There are various local businesses within walking distance of the pub, and mixed residential housing surrounds it. 

The pub operates over two floors; the first floor is a modern bar area. The exposed beam ceiling and the log burner give the pub on the ground floor a traditional and familiar appearance.
