St Columb Major is a small town about 6 miles from Newquay and should not be confused with St Columb Minor which district in Newquay itself. Often referred to locally as St Columb, it is situated approximately seven miles (11 km) southwest of Wadebridge and six miles (10 km) east of Newquay. The designation Major distinguishes it from the smaller settlement and parish of St Columb Minor on the coast. The parish has approx 3800 residents.
The Silver Ball is a single-bar pub with two distinct seating areas with a wrap-around bar and a games area off that with a pool table and jukebox. There is a domestic kitchen through the hallway with access to the domestic quarters. Through the bar areas, there is access to the ladies and the gents toilets.
