The Barley Mow is an attractive, traditional Victorian style building situated on the outskirts of Bedford, with the town centre just a 10-minute walk away. It is close to Bedford prison, and one of the smaller campuses of Bedford college so has a strong footfall passing by daily. Although there is no parking on-site, there is a large multi-storey car park located to the rear of the pub which is also used by shoppers. The pub is situated on a large corner plot in an area is predominantly commercially based with shops and light industry with residential properties within walking distance. Bedford is a thriving, affluent town with very good rail links to London and the north.
The Barley Mow is a two-room operation with a large bar situated in the heart of the pub, servicing all areas. There is a lounge bar with a mixture of fixed and loose seating, with an area that accommodates the very popular live entertainment of an evening. Through from the bar, there is a games room housing a pool table and darts board. To the rear of the pub, there is a large courtyard which could accommodate a number of picnic benches.
The pub is one of the oldest LGBT venues in the East of England and has a reputation for being a relaxed, safe venue with excellent entertainment. The pub is predominantly a wet-led offer and focuses on cocktails and premium spirits. There is an opportunity to open during the day with a more chameleon offer, including coffee and cask ales as predominantly the daytime attraction was aimed at the college & prison, with a lunchtime/evening food menu & a good selection of drinks. The pub has a very good, well equipped commercial kitchen.
We are looking for an experienced operator who will get involved in re-building this recent successful business that has waned in the last year or so. Using the current strong foundation of its late-night venue operation & its long-standing LGBT reputation as a platform to relaunch its daytime & evening trade. Re-kindling contact & communication with both the college & prison will benefit the trade greatly. The introduction of a food offer would also add to the pub's attraction for the local businesses nearby. With the pub's location, its great condition, the great facilities & its solid trading base, this could be a great opportunity for a hardworking & social business person.
The private accommodation which is accessed through the bar consists of three bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchen in good condition.
